What would be the best way to ship a guitar internationally and how could I find out an estimate of what this would cost?
If I use the USPS I can only insure it up to $500
If I use Fed Ex or UPS I can insure for more but there are brokerage fees to get it through customs. Anyone have any ideas or experience in this area?

Why don't you call heritage... then you won't have to worry about the insurance of the carrier.

DHL did a great job at a very reasonable cost getting a guitar of mine to Switzerland. A German friend told me DHL has a much bigger presence in Europe than either UPS or FedEx. DHL did all the customs work, for an additional fee. You have to fill out an Import Declaration and a Commercial Invoice. DHL can supply all forms and the instruction sheets to fill them out. I am not sure if DHL is as present in other areas besides Europe.

THough USPS is the cheapest it is often slower than UPS Fed Ex or DHL. Ins as noted is a pain with the USPS. Customs is a pain with UPS and Fed Ex so you trade off.
I do like the heritege idea and never thought of them but will next time
Watch your box size, as most places take to 108 inches   length plus girth
   Good Luck
